Firefly for Syrians

Education and hope for children uprooted by war.

Firefly for Syrians was founded in 2016 among the Syrian refugees in Antakya, Turkey. What started with just 1 teacher and 25 students in a refugee camp has since grown to provide vital education for Syrian children across Turkey and Syria.

For over 14 years, Syrian children have lived through war, displacement, and unimaginable loss. They’ve survived civil war, earthquakes, and economic collapse - but children and their families tell us they need more than safety alone — they need education, connection, and hope for the future. As Syria faces a new phase, when the bombs stop and the headlines fade, children are still left without schools, safe places to play, or the hope of a brighter tomorrow. Firefly is here to change that.

Now officially registered in Syria (August 2025), Firefly for Syrians has ambitious plans to expand its reach to bring education and hope to as many children as possible. Our programmes currently support around 1000 children every month, providing:

  • Early years education: Pre-school classes for children aged 4-6 providing foundational literacy and numeracy.
  • Applied Sciences Curriculum: A unique trauma-informed science programme giving children practical skills and providing creative education.
  • Catch-up education: For children who have fallen behind due to multiple displacements or as a result of poor education provision.
  • Teacher training: Recruiting, mentoring and supporting over 60 trainee teachers a year to fill the gaps in the shattered education system.
  • Online lesson resources: Providing high quality syllabus for teachers across Syria, with over 360,000 lesson downloads.

The children Firefly works with are curious, creative, and eager to learn — they simply need the conditions to do so.
